Frequently Asked Questions and Information for Potential Puppy Buyers

Where is the Bull Terrier from?

The Bull Terrier was formed during early Industrial day of England. The bred originated from the now extinct white English terrier and the English bulldog. James Hinks is often thought of as the father of the breed. He bred the first white bull terriers that fit the image we know today. The colored bull terrier came later with the cross breeding of Stafford’s to white bull terriers. There were many great people who fostered the foundation and purification of this amazing breed.

Are Bull Terriers easy to train?

Bull Terriers are wonderfully intelligent dogs, just because they don't do what you say doesn’t mean they don't understand you. This breed is known for being head strong and food motivated. By having a very good reward, training can be fun for you and your dog, but Bull Terriers are not your typical  Labrador.

Are Bull Terriers good with other animals?

Yes a well socialized Bull Terrier would love the company of another animal. But be careful when first introducing new pets to an adult Bull Terrier they can sometimes be a little to rough for your new kitten.

What are the major health concerns for the Bull Terrier?

Unfortunately the Bull Terrier has been affected greatly by the gene which carried deafness. It is most common in the white Bull Terrier but can occasionally show up in colored Bull Terriers as well. Kidney failure is another plague of the bull terrier, this can be detected early on though testing. Patella Luxation is another concern which causes lameness in the Bull Terriers knee joint, although most cases of this have not been seen widely spread in the US. And of course depending on where you live and the climate there Bull Terriers can have issues with dry skin, finding the right foods and correct amount of exercise will often cure this problem.

Why do Bull Terriers look different among themselves?

There are three main body types for the Bull Terrier, these include the bull type, the terrier type and the Dalmatian type. Often combinations of these types are bred together to achieve certain goals by the breeder i.e. longer legs, wider chest, broader back ect.

What is the weight range of the Bull Terrier?

Typically the male Bull Terrier is between 50-70lbs in the US

the female Bull Terrier is between 35-60lbs in the US

New dog owners and the less experienced dog owner should not consider a Bull Terrier for their first or next dog. The Bull Terrier is not for everyone, in most cases you need to have training experience and a very patient attitude. Bull Terriers require a lot of time and can not be just locked up in a kennel or put outside on a chain. This breed needs to interact and be exercised to avoid destructive actions.

What can I do with my Bull Terrier?

Bull Terriers can be used in a variety of sports. Many clubs such as the AKC offer conformation, agility, rally, flyball, weight pulling and many other fun exciting things to do with you bully. Don't under estimate these dogs!

How do I get involved in events with my Bull Terrier?

By looking up your local parent club on the AKC website you can find a variety of events offered. Also by calling local training facilities in your area you should be able to find activities which you can be involved in.

What do you feed a Bull Terrier?

I find feeding raw diet is the best way to keep my bull terriers healthy. But for those of you who don't like the idea of raw meat you should consider foods with no soy, wheat and animals rendered fats, look over the ingredients and make sure you know what your major protein source is and what vitamins and vegetables are in the food. Look over this site for more information (scraps).
